Craving life: Managing craving thoughts and addictive behaviors.

Abstract: Cravings are intense desires for using or consuming certain substances with the goal of feeling pleasure and satisfaction. They are a key component of addiction-related problems, including addictions to substances like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. substance use, tobacco use, overeating). Individuals presenting with addictions often have difficulty managing cravings, although this is an inevitable aspect of experiencing substance use and other addictive behaviors. Difficulties involving cravings are associated with substantial distress, functional impairment, and low quality of life. Empirically supported practical strategies will be presented for managing cravings and addictive behaviors.

Abstract:The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and its social and economic effects, hit people belonging to certain groups in a particularly hard way throughout Europe. Upholding equality and protecting against discrimination and hate during the pandemic, as well as other, similar types of crisis, are key aspects and central, regional and local authorities play an important role, as well as National Human Rights Institutions and Equality Bodies. A crisis often makes more visible longstanding inequalities that existed already before its outbreak. Institutions at all levels should tackle and eliminate the structural inequalities and disadvantages to increase resilience and preparedness to future crises.

Abstract: Biobanks are biorepositories of data and biological material, which are contributed voluntarily by fellow citizens. Donors are people like you and me who decide totally on a voluntary and altruistic basis to donate blood and information about their health status that can be used anonymously for a variety of research studies aimed at discovering new knowledge about diseases, improving disease diagnosis and treatment through promoting innovative medicines. Archived material of high quality can be used by scientists around the world for genetics or epidemiological studies in disparate fields of medicine, and anticipating high societal impact in terms of the benefit to many.

Embracing intersectionality to action EDI in teaching and learning: Towards transformative praxis in Global Public health

Speaker: Prof. Anuj Kapilashrami, Professor in Global Health Policy and Equity and Director of Global Engagement & Partnerships in the School of Health & Social Care at University of Essex
Abstract: Recent developments have brought concerns around EDI centre-stage in UK HE, establishing the imperative for making education more inclusive. Yet, practical examples of inclusion continue to tackle injustices in silos, in terms of individual-focused protected characteristics, and fail to interrogate the long-standing colonial legacies of injustices. Intersectionality offers a promising departure from the above approach. Despite the popularity of intersectional thinking in HE, operationalising it to transform EDI policy and practice in organisations is not straightforward, and fraught with critical challenges and difficult conversations.Following a brief introduction to the role of intersectional thinking in EDI, this talk will share the presenter’s experience of developing and implementing an intersectionality-informed EDI framework to design and teach a MSc programme in Global Public Health.

In Antwerp, students will attend sessions and engage in workshops designed to help them in shaping their research proposal on European Identity. The event offers potential PhD-candidates the unique opportunity to learn from experts on European Identity and grant writing. The Impact of environmental degradation on human migrations

Abstract: The lecture is a richly illustrated journey from prehistoric times to the present day, answering a few fundamental questions important from the point of view of current environmental changes
• How did soil cover influence the rise and fall of great civilizations?
• Are the soil resources finite?
• How does Anthropocene scalp the Earth?
• Who are the environmental refugees and how much are they connected with soil degradation?
The presentation will show the effects of environmental degradation from ancient Mesopotamia to the contemporary problems of the Sahel zone. The causes of the disappearance of the Aral Lake, the formation of Dust Bowls and the floods in the Far East and Central America will also be shown. Examples of ways to deal with the above environmental problems will also be shown.

Sustainable development and poverty reduction – interconnected causes, multidisciplinary research and integrated policies

Abstract: The first two decades of the 20th century have challenged the ways in which the global scientific and political communities define their goals and paradigms. The new scenario incorporates an increasing amount of evidence on unexpected consequences of the complex interactions between human actions and environmental changes. Sustainable development is not only a useful idea to define common goals and expectations (embodied in the SDGs) but it also represents a substantial departure from many traditional scientific methodologies and political designs. One of its main innovations is the multidisciplinary approach. In this talk, we will discuss how the very well-known economic goals of reducing poverty and inequality are substantially transformed when they are understood together with other complementary non-economic goals like preserving biodiversity and mitigating climate change.

How climate change drives biodiversity loss – and how to counteract it

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Martin Diekmann (University of Bremen)
Abstract: The earth currently experiences a loss of species richness – biodiversity – at an unprecedented speed. This biodiversity crisis also applies to Germany and other parts of Europe. The drivers of this change are manifold: the loss of natural habitats, more intensive land use, the application of pesticides and too many fertilizers, but increasingly also climate change. There is growing evidence that plants and animals are already responding to altered regimes of temperature and rainfall, and will increasingly do so in the near future.
The presentation will highlight the main changes in biodiversity and their underlying causes, using data from both long-term observations and experiments, looking at plants, but also birds, insects and other animal groups. Although the net effects of climate change on plants and animals are negative, some species may profit from the changes – and a conclusion of the talk will be that it is not too late to take counteracting measures to halt biodiversity loss.

Disruptive technologies: how to tame and use them
Abstract: Disruptive technologies or innovations have become a global buzzword based on a theory that explains why once successful companies that care about their customers and investors ’interests fail – precisely because they did what traditional business management science prescribes. According to the theory, disruptive technologies are changing the world and creating new business empires on the ruins of dinosaur predecessors. Although disruptive technology is rare, understanding it allows for better innovation management, targeting innovation activities, and significantly reducing failure. During the talk participants will learn the basics of disruptive innovation theory and how to identify which innovations customers want to pay for and how to organize business that encourages and does not jeopardize innovation. Is the electric car a disruptive innovation? Can a new technology endanger their business, regardless of whether they work in multinational companies, universities or just thinking about creating a startup? How to know if a scientific discovery contains a seed of a disruptive technology with a potential for a business success?
