YUFE Becomes an international non-profit association, Solidifying its Commitment to European University Transformation

Antwerp – Belgium. 29th February 2024

The Young Universities for the Future of Europe (YUFE), a vibrant alliance of 10 universities across Europe, has announced its official transition to an AISBL (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif), an international non-profit association submitted under Belgian law. This significant step marks a new chapter in YUFE’s journey, solidifying its commitment to driving innovation and excellence in European higher education. Moreover, it is a crucial development for the sustainability of the Alliance, moving away from being a project towards creating a real long-term initiative. With the legal entity, YUFE establishes a central and impartial unit serving the entire alliance.

Recognised as one of the leading consortia in the 2019 and 2022 Erasmus+ European Universities calls, the YUFE Alliance is pioneering a fundamental transformation of higher education by developing a student-centered, equalitarian, open, and inclusive European University. Our ten young research-intensive universities and two non-academic organizations from across Europe work together to support European citizens to become globally oriented-lifelong learners equipped to make meaningful contributions to the communities in which they live, learn, and work.

“Transitioning to an AISBL is a major milestone for YUFE. It demonstrates our unwavering commitment to building a truly integrated European university that fosters innovation, collaboration, and excellence. This new legal structure will empower us to accelerate our progress and make a tangible impact on the future of European higher education.”

YUFE President

Maria-Valerie Schegk

YUFE Secretary General

By becoming an AISBL, YUFE gains in international exposure, autonomy, and flexibility to keep developing this alliance across Europe. This agreement is the result of a substantial commitment of YUFE’s member universities to a joint vision.

Overall, this new organizational structure will allow YUFE to respond swiftly to challenges in the European higher education in future. The AISBL will be based in Brussels where YUFE will also open an office in the second half of the year.
